The hospital in that paper sure does not fit the one I remember. By the late 50's it was not the best place to be. My grandmother went in for one thing and came out all banged up, They did not watch over her, and she fell out of the bed many times and they did not feed her or clean her up.  |

My grandmother died there on the day she was to be discharged! I worked there in social services for two yars in 1961 and 1962. It was a bucket of blood and a dumping station for old people whose families didn't want to care for them or couldn't afford to pay for nursing homes. Being in social services I saw many cases of dumping. When we brought my grandmothe there by ambulance the first question after what kind of insurance she had was, will you take her home when she recovers?  Amazing. My boss, the head of social services and an MSW with a Masters was a drunk who used to go on binges and sleep them off in the nurses residence. Our office was in the basement across from the employee kitchen and dining area. Thank the Lord, as part of the professional staff, I got to eat in the doctor's and nurses cafeteria but it wasn't much better. One of the cooks ran a numbers racket right there in the hospital. I gave up social services after the transportation strike when we had to walk to the Concourse and get picked up by ambulance to take us to work and the welfare clients came by taxi. I was berated by a client who said I was dumb because I couldn't speak to her in spanish! So much for my social services career in the Bronx. The wards held about 20 beds each and there was never a nurse to look after the patients. They had aids with no training and my poor grandmother was never cared for properly. I was asked NOT to come back when I complained about her treatment. I cried when I saw her there. My dad went every day to ensure she was ok. He was on his way to pick her up when she died. A day I will not forget ever. |

The hospital had a bad reputation in it's final years. It was old, worn down and dirty. I remember Mickey and I visited her grandfather there a few days before he passed away. It was a landmark in the Bronx in it's day and is part of the Bronx Memories we have.
Anyone remember St Barnabas Hospital on 3rd Avenue and 183rd st? It was a red brick building I believe.

grandmother was at fordham when she fell and broke her hip --- all i remember are the wards with rows of beds next to each other
i passed st barnabas when i was in nyc this past may/june driving around taking pics

I WAS BORN IN FORDHAM HOSPITAL, MANY MOONS AGO.
YEARS LATER IT BECAME A 'SHOOT HOUSE'.
